You will say when something happens: today, tomorrow, at a given hour and on a given day of the week.
The idea
Words such as bugün (today), yarın (tomorrow), dün (yesterday), şimdi (now), hafta sonu (the weekend) and bu akşam (this evening) say when by themselves, with no ending and no word for "at" or "on". A clock time takes the locative after saat: saat üçte, saat dokuzda. A day of the week is followed by günü: cumartesi günü.
| Number | Ending | Example |
|---|---|---|
| bir | -de | saat birde |
| iki | -de | saat ikide |
| üç | -te | saat üçte |
| dört | -te | saat dörtte |
| beş | -te | saat beşte |
| altı | -da | saat altıda |
| yedi | -de | saat yedide |
| sekiz | -de | saat sekizde |
| dokuz | -da | saat dokuzda |
| on | -da | saat onda |
Examples
- Bugün okula gidiyorum.I am going to school today. The word bugün stands alone: "today" needs no ending and no extra word for "on" or "at".
- Dersimiz saat dokuzda başlıyor. Our lesson starts at nine. After saat, a clock time takes the locative: dokuz becomes dokuzda. Saat dokuz alone would mean "it is nine o'clock".
- Cumartesi günü ailem geliyor. My family is coming on Saturday.A day of the week is followed by günü ("the day of"), so the day itself takes no locative.
- Hafta sonu müzeye gidiyoruz. We go to the museum at the weekend.
- Dün çocuklar erken geldi.Yesterday the children came early.Dün ("yesterday") needs no ending either. The past is marked on the verb: geldi.

Watch out
Saat üç means "it is three o'clock", not "at three". For "at three" the number needs the locative: toplantı saat üçte. Do not add -de to bugün or yarın the way English puts "on" or "at" in front: the bare word already means "today" and "tomorrow".
Try it yourself
The meeting is at three o'clock. Add the ending to üç.
Show answer or example answer
üçte
üçte: ç is voiceless, so the ending starts with t, and the front vowel ü gives -te.
The film starts at six. Add the ending to altı.
Show answer or example answer
altıda
altıda: the last vowel ı is back, so -da; after a vowel the ending starts with d.
We are not going to school on Friday. Write the word that follows the day name.
Show answer or example answer
günü
günü: gün (day) with the ending "the day of" follows the day name, so the name needs no -da of its own.
I get up at seven. Add the ending to yedi.
Show answer or example answer
yedide
yedide: yedi ends in the front vowel i, and a vowel is voiced, so -de.
