A neighbour shows you a thriving garden; a friend’s daughter draws beautifully. You can add maşallah to your praise. At this level, the challenge is to read the situation and tone, not just translate the word.

The idea

Maşallah is a fixed interjection of Arabic origin, associated with admiration and a wish that something good be protected from the evil eye. That is a cultural belief, not a guarantee. In these examples, it responds to a quality or result already visible; inşallah looks towards a hoped-for outcome. Put maşallah before or after the compliment. The word stays the same regardless of whom you address; the surrounding words carry the distinction, as in bahçeniz (your garden, polite or plural) and kızın (your daughter, familiar). Standard Turkish writes it as one word with ş and double l. The glosses convey the praise rather than translate the religious wording literally.

Examples

  • Maşallah, bahçeniz yemyeşil olmuş.How lovely, your garden has become so green!
  • Maşallah, kızın ne güzel çiziyor! How wonderfully your daughter draws!
  • Maşallah, deden hâlâ çok dinç.How wonderful, your grandfather is still so spry!
  • Bu kadar kısa sürede bütün rafları tek başına yapmışsın, maşallah! You made all the shelves on your own in such a short time—how impressive!
  • Maşallah, bugün de toplantıya bir saat geç geldin!Well done, you were an hour late to the meeting today too! This is ironic reproach, not sincere praise: another hour-long delay is unwelcome.
  • Maşallah, projeniz çok ilgi görüyor. How wonderful, your project is attracting a lot of interest!

Watch out

Do not assume every maşallah is a compliment. Said to someone who is an hour late again, it can express reproach through irony. Notice the unwelcome behaviour and the speaker’s tone. Nor should you replace inşallah with maşallah when you merely hope to start a job next month.

Try it yourself

  1. The flowers are already open. Choose the expression that admires the colourful balcony. Çiçeklerin hepsi açmış! ___, balkon rengârenk. (maşallah / inşallah)

    Show answer or example answer

    Maşallah

Maşallah: the flowers have already opened and the speaker can see their colours. The blank introduces appreciation of that result, not a wish that they bloom later.

  2. You hope to start a job next month. Choose the expression for that hope. ___, gelecek ay işe başlayacağım. (maşallah / inşallah)

    Show answer or example answer

    İnşallah

İnşallah: the job is due to start next month and the speaker expresses hope. There is no present achievement to admire in this sentence.

  3. Someone is an hour late again, and the speaker is annoyed. Choose: praise or reproach. Maşallah, bugün de toplantıya bir saat geç geldin! (övgü / sitem)

    Show answer or example answer

    sitem

sitem: being an hour late again is the complaint. The apparently approving word clashes with that situation, so the speaker is reproaching the late arrival.

  4. A friend sincerely praises your drawing. Choose the suitable reply. Maşallah, çok güzel çiziyorsun! → ___ (Teşekkür ederim / Geçmiş olsun)

    Show answer or example answer

    Teşekkür ederim

Teşekkür ederim: a sincere compliment is a kind remark you can thank someone for. Geçmiş olsun would offer sympathy after illness or a mishap, neither of which is mentioned here.

Use it today

Write two short exchanges with maşallah: admire an actual achievement in one and reproach a repeated delay in the other. Add a brief situation note so the intention is clear. Give the sincere compliment a suitable reply.
