A bus may leave before you arrive; tomorrow’s weather may improve. With inşallah, you express the outcome you hope for. You will practise hopes about your own plans and events beyond your control.

The idea

İnşallah literally means “God willing” and can also express everyday “hopefully”. It is one fixed word, written with ş, and does not change with the person. Put it before the statement or after it: İnşallah yarın görüşürüz and Yarın görüşürüz inşallah. Here görüşürüz looks ahead to a meeting; the future form in bitireceğiz also works. To hope that something will not happen, make the verb negative, as in İnşallah toplantı uzamaz. Umarım means “I hope” without explicitly referring to God: Umarım hava düzelir.

Examples

  • İnşallah yarın görüşürüz.Hopefully we will see each other tomorrow.
  • İnşallah hava düzelir.Hopefully the weather will improve.
  • İnşallah otobüse yetişiriz.Hopefully we will catch the bus.
  • İnşallah yeni evinizi seversiniz.I hope you will like your new home.
  • İnşallah toplantı uzamaz.Hopefully the meeting will not run long.
  • Bu işi cuma günü bitireceğiz inşallah.God willing, we will finish this work on Friday.

Watch out

A reply of İnşallah expresses hope but does not by itself guarantee attendance. Do not turn it into a definite yes when arranging a meeting. Also, the word adds no negation: yağar hopes for rain in this context, while yağmaz hopes for no rain.

Try it yourself

  1. You hope the weather improves. Fill ___ hava düzelir. with either hope expression taught here.

    Show answer or example answer

    İnşallah / Umarım

İnşallah / Umarım: either fits because better weather is the desired outcome, not a forecast you can guarantee. The second choice states your hope without mentioning God.

  2. Rewrite İnşallah yarın görüşürüz. with inşallah at the end. Keep the other words in their order.

    Show answer or example answer

    Yarın görüşürüz inşallah.

Yarın görüşürüz inşallah.: the meeting remains the hoped-for event when the expression moves to the end. The instruction keeps the time word before the verb; no verb ending needs to change.

  3. You want a dry day: İnşallah yağmur ___. Choose yağar or yağmaz.

    Show answer or example answer

    yağmaz

yağmaz: you want the rain not to fall, so choose the negative verb. Yağar would instead express the hope that it rains, reversing your intention.

Use it today

Write two short exchanges: suggest meeting tomorrow, then discuss the weather for a picnic. Use a hopeful reply in one and a negative verb in the other. Say whether either exchange actually confirms a plan.
