A colleague announces a new job; a family has just moved. Hayırlı olsun welcomes that new beginning and wishes that it will bring good things. Here you will personalise the wish and respond without simply echoing it.

The idea

Use hayırlı olsun on hearing about a new home, job or venture: roughly, “may it turn out well”. You can name the new thing first: yeni evin for someone you call sen, yeni eviniz for someone you call siz or for several people. The wish is about the home or job, so olsun stays the same. If the context is clear, the phrase stands alone. It looks ahead to the good the new start may bring; tebrikler can instead focus on congratulating an achievement. Reply with teşekkür ederim, familiar sağ ol or polite/plural sağ olun.

Watch out

Do not change olsun to olun just because you are being polite: yeni işiniz hayırlı olsun wishes well for the job. In sağ olun, however, you address the person directly, so the polite/plural form belongs there.

Try it yourself

  1. A friend has a new home. Complete with the two-word wish taught here.

    Show answer or example answer

    hayırlı olsun

hayırlı olsun: the friend already has a new home, so you wish for good things in this new stage. Geçmiş olsun would respond to illness or trouble instead.

  2. Address someone politely. Complete the wish with the appropriate form of olmak.

    Show answer or example answer

    olsun

olsun: the grammatical subject is yeni işiniz, the new job. The respectful ending in işiniz identifies whose job it is; it does not make the job a person addressed as “you”.

  3. Wish a family well in their new home. Write the whole word meaning “your home”, using siz.

    Show answer or example answer

    eviniz

eviniz: one home belongs to the family you address as siz. The word marks the owners; there is no need to turn ev into plural houses.

  4. Give a polite two-word thank-you using sağ and the form for siz.

    Show answer or example answer

    sağ olun

sağ olun: you thank the person who offered the good wish, using the polite/plural address. Keep the two words separate; sağolun is not the standard spelling.

Use it today

Write a two-line exchange for a friend with a new job, then one for a family in a new home. Include a wish and a thank-you; add a question about the start date or a hope about life in the home.
