You will distinguish three shop names and take a small purchase from greeting to the final “anything else?”. The food words are examples, not a complete shopping list.

The idea

A bakkal is a small grocery shop, a manav sells fruit and vegetables, and a kasap sells meat. These words can also name the person selling the goods. Start with Merhaba; ask whether an item is available with Süt var mı?, or give a quantity and add lütfen: İki limon, lütfen. Stock varies from shop to shop.

Examples

  • Bugün bakkaldan süt alıyorum.Today I am buying milk from the grocery shop.
  • Manavdan iki limon istiyorum.I would like two lemons from the greengrocer.
  • Kasaptan yarım kilo kıyma alıyorum.I am buying half a kilo of minced meat from the butcher.
  • Merhaba, süt var mı?Hello, do you have milk?
  • İki limon, lütfen. Two lemons, please.
  • Yarım kilo kıyma, lütfen.Half a kilo of minced meat, please.
  • Başka bir şey istiyor musunuz?Would you like anything else?
  • Hayır, teşekkür ederim. No, thank you.

Watch out

Başka bir şey istiyor musunuz? asks whether you want anything else, not whether you want to replace your order. If your list is complete, Hayır, teşekkür ederim politely closes the request.

Try it yourself

  1. Which shop sells everyday groceries and cleaning supplies? Choose: bakkal, manav, kasap.

    Show answer or example answer

    bakkal

bakkal: the clue describes a small shop with everyday groceries and cleaning supplies, rather than a specialist fruit or meat seller.

  2. Which shop specialises in fruit and vegetables? Choose: bakkal, manav, kasap.

    Show answer or example answer

    manav

manav: the defining clue is fruit and vegetables; choose the shop type, not the name of a particular fruit.

  3. Which shop specialises in fresh meat? Choose: bakkal, manav, kasap.

    Show answer or example answer

    kasap

kasap: fresh meat is the clue. In the example, kıyma is minced meat, so this is the relevant specialist shop.

  4. Reply to Başka bir şey istiyor musunuz? with “No, thank you.”

    Show answer or example answer

    Hayır, teşekkür ederim

Hayır, teşekkür ederim: you are declining additional items. The thanks keeps the refusal polite without cancelling what you already requested.

Use it today

Choose one of the three shops. Write a greeting, a request for one item with a quantity, and a reply declining anything else. Then change shops and adapt the item.
