The town trusts its clockmaker, but he cannot bring himself to go away for a week. Follow the repair and notice when his way of working changes. The central question is what must change before he can leave.

The idea

Read the repair and the transfer of knowledge as two connected events. The clock starts again, but the notebook addresses a difficulty that a new part cannot fix. Base your interpretation of the ending on actions and objects: handing over a key, answering questions and keeping a return ticket. Separate what happens from what these details suggest.

Watch out

In Saat onsuz da çalışıyordu, onsuz da means ‘even without him’. It does not establish that the town will never need him again. Likewise, a return ticket supports a temporary absence, not a permanent departure from his trade.

Try it yourself

  1. How long did the clockmaker want to go away for? Write the duration given in the text in Turkish.

    Show answer or example answer

    bir hafta / yedi gün

bir hafta / yedi gün: he wants to visit his sister for one week. The two days mentioned later concern the timing of his departure, not the length of his stay.

  2. Who replaced the clock part? Write the name.

    Show answer or example answer

    Derya

Derya: she replaces the part while the clockmaker stands back. His checking the work afterwards does not make him the person who carried out the replacement.

  3. Which interpretation does the return ticket support? Choose: ara veriyor / işi bırakıyor.

    Show answer or example answer

    ara veriyor

ara veriyor: he keeps a return ticket and leaves the repair notebook in the shop. These details support a break from work; the text does not say he retires.

  4. What might Derya’s drawings make easier? Choose: bilgiyi aktarmayı / dükkânı kapatmayı.

    Show answer or example answer

    bilgiyi aktarmayı

bilgiyi aktarmayı: the drawings accompany names and diagnostic observations. They can help someone understand the repair process instead of depending entirely on the master’s memory.
