An unexpected letter sends Elif back to a bookshop. Read once to follow the discovery, then trace the dates and the final actions. The story and its letter are original fiction.

The idea

Anchor each time word to the person writing or speaking. In the letter, yarın means the day after its date; on the telephone, the same word belongs to a conversation thirty years later. For the ending, connect the empty pages and pencils to the siblings’ earlier hobby.

Watch out

The promise Bir gün birlikte bir sergi açacağız does not prove that an exhibition happened. Likewise, the final scene suggests a return to drawing, but does not show a finished picture or a new exhibition.

Try it yourself

  1. Where in the book was the letter? Complete in Turkish: Mektup ___ arasındaydı.

    Show answer or example answer

    sayfaların / kitabın sayfalarının

sayfaların: Elif discovers the paper when she opens the novel at home. It lies between its pages, not on a shelf in the shop.

  2. Who wrote the letter? Write the name.

    Show answer or example answer

    Leyla

Leyla: the letter ends with the younger sister’s name. Hasan is the person addressed, while Elif is the later finder.

  3. What date does yarın refer to in the letter? Write day, Turkish month name and year.

    Show answer or example answer

    13 Mayıs 1996

13 Mayıs 1996: the letter is dated 12 May 1996, so the first drawing lesson is planned for the next day. The discovery in 2026 does not change that date.

  4. What are the siblings probably preparing to do at the end? Choose: resim yapmaya / kitap satmaya.

    Show answer or example answer

    resim yapmaya

resim yapmaya: two open sketchbooks and a pencil beside each one suggest that both siblings will draw. Selling books does not explain those preparations.

Write a three-sentence continuation in Turkish. Use belki for an uncertain detail, and explain which two objects in the last paragraph support your prediction.
