Use geliştirmek when someone develops a method, creates a tool or improves an ability. The examples connect an agent with what changes; the table gives affirmative forms for all six persons.
The idea
Geliştirmek is transitive: yeni bir yöntem geliştirmek means to develop a new method, while yazma becerimi geliştirmek means to improve my writing skill. A specific object takes the accusative; an indefinite object such as yeni bir yöntem can stay unmarked. The stem geliştir- remains intact in geliştiriyorum and geliştirdim. In geliştireceğim, the future suffix changes its k to ğ. Also compare geliştirmiyorum (I am not developing) and geliştirebilirim (I can develop).

Watch out
Do not treat geliştirmek and gelişmek as interchangeable: Yazma becerim gelişiyor says the skill is improving; Yazma becerimi geliştiriyorum says I am improving it. For self-development, use kendimi geliştirmek; kendime would mean “to myself” and is not the object needed here.
