Use sevinmek for a joyful reaction to something. You will name its cause, share someone else’s happiness and describe the reaction at different times.
The idea
The person who feels glad is the subject. The cause takes the dative: habere sevinmek, to be glad about the news. For someone else’s good fortune, use senin adına sevindim, I was happy for you. The stem sevin- stays intact: seviniyorum, sevindim, sevinirim. In sevineceğim and sevineceğiz, the future ending’s k becomes ğ before the person ending. The negative past is sevinmedim; the negative present is sevinmiyorum.

Watch out
Do not confuse sevinmek with sevmek, to love or like. Haberi sevdim says you liked the news; habere sevindim expresses your joyful reaction. The two verbs use different noun endings.
