At B2, a list of opposites becomes useful when you can explain what is being contrasted. Use these eight pairs to discuss solutions, assessments, participation and changing numbers.
The idea
Choose the opposite for the meaning used in the sentence. For a door, açık contrasts with kapalı; for a colour, it contrasts with koyu. Match words on the same dimension: geçici / kalıcı describes duration, somut / soyut how concrete an idea is, and öznel / nesnel whether an assessment rests on personal impressions or facts. Learn each pair with its context, not as interchangeable labels.
| Opposite pair | Meaning and context |
|---|---|
| açık ↔ kapalı | open ↔ closed (door) |
| açık ↔ koyu | light ↔ dark (colour) |
| geçici ↔ kalıcı | temporary ↔ permanent (solution) |
| somut ↔ soyut | concrete ↔ abstract (example, idea) |
| öznel ↔ nesnel | subjective ↔ objective (assessment) |
| gönüllü ↔ zorunlu | voluntary ↔ compulsory (participation) |
| artmak ↔ azalmak | increase ↔ decrease (number) |
| yararlı ↔ zararlı | useful ↔ harmful (method) |

Watch out
Negating an adjective does not always assert its opposite. Yararlı değil denies usefulness; it does not by itself mean zararlı. A method may have no effect either way. Likewise, calling an assessment öznel says it depends on a viewpoint, not that it is necessarily false.
Try it yourself
For a colour, choose the opposite of açık: kapalı or koyu.
Show answer or example answer
koyu
koyu: the question concerns a colour’s shade, so dark is the relevant contrast. Kapalı would normally describe a door’s state here.
We want a solution that will last for years. Choose the opposite of geçici: kalıcı or somut.
Show answer or example answer
kalıcı
kalıcı: lasting for years supplies the clue about duration. Somut would describe how concrete the solution is, not how long it lasts.
An assessment reflects only personal taste, with no measurements. Is it öznel or nesnel?
Show answer or example answer
öznel
öznel: personal taste is the stated basis for the assessment. No measurements are offered to support an objective judgement.
If a method is not useful, must it be harmful? Answer in Turkish: evet or hayır.
Show answer or example answer
hayır
hayır: a method can provide no benefit and still cause no harm. The absence of usefulness alone does not establish a harmful effect.
