The idea
Both can mean use and often take the same object. Benutzen is common for operating or making use of something; verwenden often highlights its purpose, especially with für + accusative.

Die App benutzen and die App verwenden are both natural. A purpose makes the sentence more informative: Ich verwende die App zum Lernen. With a person, Du benutzt mich can accuse someone of exploitation, so it is not a neutral request for help. Verwenden has two standard participles, verwendet and verwandt; verwendet is easy to learn alongside benutzt.
