Borrow or lend? Follow the people in leihen, ausleihen and borgen, practise separable forms and make the direction clear.

The idea
Leihen and ausleihen can describe either giving or receiving temporarily. Jemandem etwas leihen gives the recipient in the dative; sich etwas von jemandem leihen shows borrowing. Borgen can also have both directions.
| Pattern / form | German example |
|---|---|
| geben: jemandem etwas leihen | Lena leiht mir ihr Rad. |
| nehmen: sich etwas von jemandem leihen | Ich leihe mir ein Rad von Lena. |
| leihen – lieh – hat geliehen | ausleihen – lieh aus – hat ausgeliehen |
| borgen – borgte – hat geborgt | jemandem etwas borgen / sich etwas borgen |
Practise the supporting grammar before changing the people or tense in these examples: German dative case: dem, der and plural endings
Read the whole construction
Lena lends you a book: Lena leiht mir ein Buch. From your side, Ich leihe mir ein Buch von Lena describes the same transfer. Ausleihen adds a separable prefix: ich leihe es aus, ich habe es ausgeliehen. Borgen is familiar in some regional or personal usage but marked as becoming dated in Duden; leihen is a useful neutral default.

- Ich leihe mir ein Buch von Lena.I borrow a book from Lena.
