Versuchen often means trying to achieve something; probieren is common for tasting or testing. Ausprobieren means trying something out in practice. These are useful starting points, but the verbs overlap: probieren can introduce an attempted action too.

The idea
Use versuchen, etwas zu tun for an attempt, die Suppe probieren for tasting and eine Methode ausprobieren for testing a method. In a main clause, aus moves to the end: Ich probiere die Methode aus. In a zu infinitive it becomes auszuprobieren.
| Situation / form | Pattern / example |
|---|---|
| versuchen | versuchen, etwas zu tun / es versuchen |
| probieren | Essen kosten / etwas testen |
| ausprobieren | eine Methode / ein Gerät ausprobieren |
| Versuch: beide möglich | Ich versuche es. / Ich probiere es. |
| Perfekt | hat versucht / hat probiert / hat ausprobiert |
| zu + trennbares Verb | auszuprobieren |

Attempt, taste or try something out
Versuchen + zu is a reliable pattern for an attempted action: Ich versuche, die Tür zu öffnen (I am trying to open the door). Use probieren for a taste: Probier die Suppe! (Taste the soup!). Use ausprobieren to test whether something works for you: Ich probiere die App aus (I am trying out the app).
Where the verbs overlap
The distinction is a learning guide, not an absolute ban. Ich probiere, die Tür zu öffnen is also possible, and versuchen can mean tasting food. Ich versuche es and Ich probiere es both mean I will give it a try. For the past, use hat versucht, hat probiert and hat ausprobiert; none adds ge-.
