Read the whole construction
In a café, Ich möchte zahlen and Ich möchte bezahlen both work. Adding mit Karte tells how you pay; für den Kaffee tells what the payment is for. Compare Ich zahle ihr zehn Euro with Ich bezahle sie: the person is dative with zahlen and accusative with bezahlen. The participles are gezahlt and bezahlt.
