Both words can express suitability, but 適当 also has a casual, negative sense.
The idea
適当な modifies a noun; 適当に modifies a verb. In formal contexts it can mean appropriate, as in an appropriate amount. ふさわしい directly modifies a noun or follows に: 役割にふさわしい means fitting for the role.
| Form | Example |
|---|---|
| 適当な | 適当な量 |
| 適当に | 適当に答える |
| ふさわしい | 役割にふさわしい |

Watch out
Do not assume 適当 always means careless: context determines the sense. For an unambiguous compliment about a person or occasion, ふさわしい is often clearer.
