Learn to identify the parts of a Japanese address.

The idea

An address generally moves from a prefecture (都道府県) to a municipality or ward, then a named area and numbers such as 丁目, 番 and 号. A postal code has seven digits; building and room details can follow the address. The example numbers are illustrative.

Examples

Please write your address.
The postal code has seven digits.
Tokyo is a prefecture-level area.
Shinjuku is a ward of Tokyo.
This address is in Shinjuku, 2-chome.
The building name and room number are also needed.

Watch out

Numbers do not necessarily name a street and house in the order familiar elsewhere. Formats and numbering systems vary by locality, so check the complete address.
