At a city office, point to a form and ask for help with the parts you cannot fill in.

The idea

書けばいいですか asks what would be appropriate to write. で marks the script in カタカナで; 書き終わったら means “when you have finished writing”.

Examples

  • すみません、この書類しょるいについて聞ききたいんですが。Excuse me, I’d like to ask about this form.
  • ここには何なにを書かけばいいですか。What should I write here?
  • 名前なまえはカタカナで書かきますか。Should I write my name in katakana?
  • 住所じゅうしょは今いまの住所じゅうしょを書かいてください。For the address, please write your current address.
  • 必要ひつようなものは何なんですか。What do I need?
  • 書かき終おわったら、どこに出だしますか。Where do I submit it once I have finished filling it in?

Watch out

Do not assume every office wants a name in katakana or the same documents. Ask the clerk about the particular form.
