Use すぎる when an action or quality exceeds a suitable degree.

The idea

Attach すぎる to the verb stem without ます, to an い-adjective without its final い, or directly to a な-adjective without な. The resulting verb conjugates: すぎます, すぎました, すぎません and すぎない.

Watch out

Do not attach it to the dictionary form or retain the adjective’s final い: 食べすぎる and 高すぎる, not 食べるすぎる or 高いすぎる.
