When you start a job, ask whether someone has time before raising a question. Identify the task, then check your understanding.

The idea

Use 誰だれに相談そうだんすればいいですか to ask whom to consult. The conditional すればいい asks what action is advisable. 〜ていただけますか politely requests an action; 〜でよろしいでしょうか checks an understanding.

Examples

I have a question; do you have a moment now?
Who should I consult about this task?
Could you explain the procedure once more?
Where can I check the materials?
Is it correct that the submission is due by Friday?
So, I should check with the person in charge first, right?

Watch out

A question about a deadline is not confirmation that the work is finished. Repeat the date or instruction you understood and wait for a reply.

Try it yourself

    Show answer or example answer

すれば and したら both ask what to do; either conditional fits before いいですか.

    Show answer or example answer

いただけます makes 説明して a polite request for the other person to explain.

    Show answer or example answer

    までで

までで checks the deadline as “by Friday”; から would indicate a starting point.

Use it today

Ask a colleague who can help with a task, request a second explanation and confirm the deadline.
