Read an original four-line exercise and describe its structure in Turkish. Yunus Emre is associated with Sufi poetry; Karacaoğlan is a major figure in the âşık tradition. The exercise below is newly written for this lesson, not a poem by either author; slashes mark its line breaks.
The idea
Separate the line, the stanza and the metre: dize is one line, dörtlük a stanza of four lines, and hece ölçüsü metre based on syllable count. Count each Turkish vowel as a syllable in this exercise. Eight syllables per line do not by themselves make a poem a semai: identifying a traditional form also involves other features, including rhyme and performance. An âşık is a poet-singer in this cultural context, often performing with a saz. Oral transmission does not automatically mean that the author is unknown.
| Term | What to examine |
|---|---|
| dize | One line of poetry |
| dörtlük | A stanza of four lines |
| hece ölçüsü | The number of syllables in each line |
Examples

- Öğrenciler her dizedeki heceleri tek tek sayıyor. The students are counting the syllables in each line one by one.
- Bir şiirin sözlü aktarılması, şairinin bilinmediği anlamına gelmez. The oral transmission of a poem does not mean that its poet is unknown.

Watch out
Translating every âşık as “someone in love” loses the cultural meaning. Look for clues such as saz and a performance before choosing the meaning. Likewise, a poem is not anonim merely because you do not recognise its author; the term concerns unknown authorship in the tradition.
Try it yourself
Which unit of poetry consists of four lines? Choose dize or dörtlük.
Show answer or example answer
dörtlük
dörtlük: the question groups four lines into one stanza; dize would name just one of those lines.
How many syllables are in Bir tohum toprağa düştü? Write the number in Turkish words.
Show answer or example answer
sekiz
sekiz: Bir (1) + tohum (2) + toprağa (3) + düştü (2) totals eight; count syllables, not words.
In Âşık sazıyla şiir söylüyor, what does âşık mean? Choose halk şairi or sevgili.
Show answer or example answer
halk şairi
halk şairi: the saz and the act of performing poetry identify an artistic role; nothing in the sentence establishes a romantic relationship.
Which term describes a poem passed down among people whose original creator is unknown? Choose anonim or imzalı.
Show answer or example answer
anonim
anonim: the prompt explicitly says that the first creator is unknown. Passing the work down orally alone would not establish this.

Count the syllables in each line of the original exercise. Then write two Turkish sentences: one about its structure, one about the seed and shoot imagery. Support each observation with a word or a count.
