You can appreciate an invitation and still decline it. Practise refusing an offer, explaining a scheduling conflict and maintaining your decision when someone suggests another date. Examples six to nine form one exchange; the final example gives a firmer closing.

The idea

Combine appreciation with a clear refusal: Davetiniz için teşekkür ederim, ancak bu kez katılamayacağım. Here katılamayacağım means “I will not be able to attend”; it does not accept the invitation. A short reason may help, but a detailed excuse is not required. Keşke gelebilsem expresses a wish you cannot fulfil in this situation. Bu kez limits the refusal to this occasion, whereas bu sunumu üstlenmem mümkün değil declines the task itself. Offer another day only if you want that alternative. The examples use polite or plural siz forms; tone and context also matter.

Watch out

Bakarız means “we’ll see”, so it can leave the proposal open. Do not use it as a clear no if your decision is settled. Likewise, başka bir gün can encourage a new invitation. When a new date does not solve the problem, acknowledge the suggestion and restate the refusal, without inventing another excuse.

Try it yourself

  1. Choose teşekkür or rica: thank someone for an invitation before declining it.

    Show answer or example answer

    teşekkür

teşekkür: the speaker is acknowledging an invitation. Rica ederim can answer thanks or express a request in other contexts; it does not supply the thanks needed here.

  2. Choose değil or yok: say that taking on the task is not possible now.

    Show answer or example answer

    değil

değil: this negates the adjective mümkün, “possible”. Yok expresses absence and cannot replace değil in this sentence.

  3. Choose gelebilsem or gelebilirim: express a wish to come despite a conflicting commitment.

    Show answer or example answer

    gelebilsem

gelebilsem: with keşke, this presents coming as a wish blocked by the existing commitment. Gelebilirim would state an ability or possibility and would not fit the intended regret.

  4. Choose değişmedi or değişebilir: the other person proposes a new date, but your refusal still stands.

    Show answer or example answer

    değişmedi

değişmedi: the decision remains the same despite the new proposal. Değişebilir would mean it might change and would reopen the discussion.

Use it today

In pairs, act out the four-turn workshop exchange. Repeat it with a genuine scheduling conflict and offer another day. Then repeat it when you cannot take on the presentation at all: thank the inviter and maintain the refusal even after a new date is proposed.
