Use balkon for a balcony, then choose an ending for going out onto it, sitting on it or looking from it. The table also shows whose balcony you mean and how to refer to several balconies.

The idea

The stem balkon keeps its final n: balkona, balkonda, balkondan. Its last vowel o gives u in balkonu and balkonum. After the plural -lar, harmony follows the new last vowel a: balkonlarımız, our balconies. Case comes after possession: balkonlarımızda, on our balconies.

Watch out

Balkonu can be a specific object or mean his/her balcony. Compare Balkonu temizliyorum with Onun balkonu dar. To make his/her balcony the object, keep the possessive ending and add -n-u: Onun balkonunu süsledik. Using onun balkonu there leaves the object ending missing.

Try it yourself

  1. Complete with the destination: Let’s go out onto the balcony.

    Show answer or example answer

    balkona

balkona: çıkalım proposes going out onto a destination here, so the noun needs -a. Balkonda would locate an activity on the balcony.

  2. Complete with the specific object: I am cleaning the balcony.

    Show answer or example answer

    balkonu

balkonu: the cleaning acts on a particular balcony. The object ending is -u after o; no owner is specified in this sentence.

  3. Complete with his or her balcony as the object: We decorated his or her balcony.

    Show answer or example answer

    balkonunu

balkonunu: onun identifies the owner. The first u marks possession, and the following n links it to the object ending -u required by süsledik.

  4. Use one word: There are flowers on our balconies.

    Show answer or example answer

    balkonlarımızda

balkonlarımızda: there is more than one balcony, they are ours, and the flowers are on them. Build balkon-lar-ımız-da in that order; -ımız follows the a of the plural.
