Fotoğraf means photograph. Use it to describe an image, put prints in an album and say whose pictures you have. For taking a photograph, the usual expression is fotoğraf çekmek.

The idea

The stem keeps both ğ and the final f: fotoğrafı, fotoğrafım. Its last vowel a gives fotoğraflar and fotoğrafımız, with dotless ı. After the bare stem, the voiceless f calls for t in fotoğrafta and fotoğraftan. Compare the plural fotoğraflarda, where the location ending follows r. The table gives this noun’s forms; the related suffix lessons explain the general patterns.

Watch out

Fotoğrafta means in the photograph; onun fotoğrafında means in his or her photograph. Keep the possessive -ı and the linking n before the case ending. Also, fotoğrafı can be a specific object or mean his/her photograph: the sentence tells you which.

Try it yourself

  1. Fill in the full form of fotoğraf: There are two cats in this photograph.

    Show answer or example answer

    fotoğrafta

fotoğrafta: the cats are visible in this image, so the blank needs location. The ending attaches directly to the final f, giving -ta; no owner is named.

  2. Fill in the full form of fotoğraf: There is an old bridge in my mother’s photograph.

    Show answer or example answer

    fotoğrafında

fotoğrafında: annemin identifies whose photograph it is. Start from annemin fotoğrafı, then add linking n and -da to locate the bridge within that image.

  3. Write “our photographs” as one Turkish word.

    Show answer or example answer

    fotoğraflarımız

fotoğraflarımız: there is more than one photograph and the owners are “we”. Put plural -lar before possessive -ımız; fotoğrafımız would name one photograph.

  4. Fill in the full form of fotoğraf: Put that photograph in the album.

    Show answer or example answer

    fotoğrafı

fotoğrafı: şu points to a particular photograph that the listener should put in the album. It is the specific object of koy, so the final -ı marks the object here, not an owner.

Use it today

Choose an imaginary album. Write one sentence about what is in a photograph, one about someone else’s photograph and one about your shared photographs. Check the endings against the table.
