With gazete (newspaper), you can name what you read, where a report appears and whose copy you mean. Follow the forms from a single paper to news taken from our newspapers.

The idea

The stem gazete stays intact; its final e gives front-vowel endings: gazeteler, gazetede, gazetenin. Compare gazete okumak (to read newspapers as an activity) with bu gazeteyi okumak (to read this particular newspaper). Possession changes the next step: gazetesi means his or her newspaper, and its object form is gazetesini. In gazetelerimizden, the order is newspaper + plural + our + from. The related suffix pages explain the general patterns.

Watch out

In Annemin gazetesini okuyorum, the newspaper belongs to my mother and is the object of reading. Gazetesi alone marks ownership, not the object here; gazeteyi marks an object but does not express that ownership. Keep -si and add -ni: gazetesini, not gazetesiyi.

Try it yourself

  1. Write the complete form of gazete: I have not read this newspaper yet. Bu ___ henüz okumadım.

    Show answer or example answer

    gazeteyi

gazeteyi: bu identifies the newspaper being read, so the object takes the accusative. The final vowel of gazete needs the linking y before -i.

  2. Write the complete form of gazete: His or her newspaper is under the table. Onun ___ masanın altında.

    Show answer or example answer

    gazetesi

gazetesi: onun tells us whose newspaper it is. The newspaper is the subject of the location statement, so the possessive -si is enough here.

  3. Write the complete form of gazete: I am reading my mother’s newspaper. Annemin ___ ben okuyorum.

    Show answer or example answer

    gazetesini

gazetesini: annemin supplies the owner, while reading makes the newspaper an object. Build gazete + si + n + i to preserve both relationships.

  4. Use the plural of gazete with “our” and “from”: I learned this news from our newspapers. Bu haberi bizim ___ öğrendim.

    Show answer or example answer

    gazetelerimizden

gazetelerimizden: there are several papers belonging to us, and they are the source of the news. Combine gazete + ler + imiz + den; a location ending would only say where.

Use it today

Write a three-sentence note about newspapers: identify the one you read, say whose newspaper is on the table, and name the newspaper you learned something from. Check possession before choosing the case.
