A paper map and a city map give you two useful patterns. You will use harita for a map, identify whose maps they are, and say where a bridge appears.
The idea
The stem harita stays intact. Its last vowel is a, so its forms include haritalar, haritayı and haritamız, despite the earlier i. Compare haritayı (the map as a specific object), haritaya (to the map) and haritada (on the map). In şehir haritası (city map), -sı links the second noun to the first; it does not mean that a person owns the map.
| Form | Meaning / use |

| haritada | on the map |

| haritam | my map |
| haritan | your map (singular) |
| haritası | his/her map |
| haritamız | our map |

Watch out
Keep the compound ending when adding a case: şehir haritasında means “on the city map”. Writing şehir haritada loses -sı, while şehir haritasıda misses the connecting n. A plain map needs only haritada.
Try it yourself
Use the accusative of harita: We are spreading the map out on the table.
Show answer or example answer
haritayı
haritayı: the map being spread out is a specific object. The final a stays, and y separates it from the accusative vowel ı.
Use one word for “our maps”: Our maps are in the bag.
Show answer or example answer
haritalarımız
haritalarımız: several maps belong to us. The plural comes before the owner ending: harita + lar + ımız. The bag is where those maps are.
Complete the compound: There is no bridge on the city map.

haritasında
haritasında: şehir tells you what kind of map it is. Keep the compound’s -sı, insert n, then add the location ending; the bridge is absent from that map.
Use the dative of harita: Put a mark on this map.
Show answer or example answer
haritaya
haritaya: the mark is being added to the map, so the map is the target of the action. After its final vowel, the dative appears as -ya.
