Use sigorta for insurance when discussing a term, a renewal or a budget. You will distinguish the insurance itself from someone’s insurance and build longer forms without losing the owner.

The idea

The stem sigorta stays intact; its final a controls the endings despite the earlier i and o: sigortalar, sigortayı, sigortanın. Compare sigortam (my insurance) with sigortası (his/her insurance). In sağlık sigortası (health insurance), -sı marks the noun compound. A following case ending comes after that marker, with linking n: sağlık sigortasına.

Watch out

Do not replace the compound ending with a bare accusative: sağlık sigortayı is wrong; use sağlık sigortasını. By contrast, sigortayı is correct when the noun stands alone as a definite object. The ending in sağlık sigortası does not by itself identify a person who owns the insurance.

Try it yourself

  1. Complete the sentence: let’s examine this insurance together. Write only the missing noun form.

    Show answer or example answer

    sigortayı

sigortayı: “this insurance” is the specific thing being examined. The accusative joins the final vowel with y; no owner has been added.

  2. Complete “My mother renewed her health insurance.” Keep the compound ending and add the object ending.

    Show answer or example answer

    sigortasını

sigortasını: renewal acts on the whole phrase sağlık sigortası. Keep its final -sı, then add linking n and accusative -ı; annem supplies the owner in this context.

  3. Build “from our insurance policies”: plural, our, then ablative.

    Show answer or example answer

    sigortalarımızdan

sigortalarımızdan: several policies belong to us, so sigorta + lar + ımız + dan expresses number, owner and “from” in that order.

  4. Complete “The expiry date of our insurance is written on the calendar.” Write the form meaning “of our insurance”.

    Show answer or example answer

    sigortamızın

sigortamızın: the date belongs to our insurance. Start from sigortamız and add genitive -ın to connect it to bitiş tarihi; the final z needs no linking consonant.

Use it today

Write two imaginary renewal sentences: one with bu sigorta, one with sağlık sigortası. Make each phrase the object, then add a sentence about the end date of your group’s insurance.
