Vergi means tax. In a report or a calculation, the ending tells you whether you mean a particular tax, several taxes, or someone’s tax. Work with the whole word before combining endings.

The idea

The stem vergi stays intact: vergiyi is the specific direct object, vergiye is dative and verginin is genitive. The plural is vergiler; possession gives vergim, vergin, vergisi, vergimiz and verginiz. In şirketin vergisi (the company’s tax), -si marks possession. As a direct object, that phrase becomes şirketin vergisini: possession comes before the case ending, with n between them.

Watch out

Vergiyi does not mean “his/her tax”: that is vergisi. To say “we are calculating the company’s tax”, use Şirketin vergisini hesaplıyoruz, keeping both possession and the object ending. By contrast, vergi ödemek means paying tax generally, while vergiyi ödemek refers to paying a particular tax.

Try it yourself

  1. Write the whole word: Let’s recalculate this tax.

    Show answer or example answer

    vergiyi

vergiyi: bu identifies the particular tax being recalculated, so the object takes the accusative. The stem ends in a vowel, giving vergi + y + i.

  2. Write the plural of vergi: taxes.

    Show answer or example answer

    vergiler

vergiler: the task asks for more than one tax, with no number before the noun. The last vowel of vergi is front, so the plural is -ler.

  3. Write the whole word: Our tax is shown here. Use the singular noun.

    Show answer or example answer

    vergimiz

vergimiz: bizim identifies us as the possessors, but there is only one tax. Add -miz to the vowel-final stem; vergilerimiz would make the taxes plural.

  4. Write the whole word: We are calculating the company’s tax. Use the singular noun.

    Show answer or example answer

    vergisini

vergisini: şirketin requires the possessive form vergisi, and the calculation acts on that tax. Add n and the accusative -i; vergiyi alone would lose the possessive link.

Use it today

Invent a short calculation exercise. Use bu vergiyi, bizim vergimiz and şirketin vergisini in three sentences, then mark which ending identifies possession and which marks the object.
