Elif and her brother plan several family visits in one day. Read once to follow the forgotten box, then again to discover why returning changes the visit. This is a fictional family, not a rule about how everyone celebrates.

The idea

Separate the practical reason for returning from the emotional outcome. The box explains why the siblings come back; the closed album, Elif taking off her coat and the final conversation show why they stay. Support an inference about the grandmother with two actions from the text, rather than treating your guess as something she explicitly says.

Bayram sabahı Elif ile kardeşi Can, anneannelerini ziyarete gitti. Elif yanında bir paket lokum getirmişti. O gün teyzelerine ve amcalarına da uğrayacaklardı. Yolda Can, “Her evde yarım saat kalsak akşama kadar herkesi görürüz,” dedi. Elif de bu planı uygun buldu.

Anneanneleri kapıyı açıp ikisine de sarıldı. Birlikte çay içerken onlara işlerini ve arkadaşlarını sordu. Sonra sehpanın üzerindeki eski fotoğraf albümünü gösterdi. “Dün dolabı düzenlerken buldum. İçinde annenizin çocukluk fotoğrafları var,” dedi. Elif saate baktı. “Bir ara fotoğraflara bakarız. Şimdi teyzeme gitmemiz gerekiyor.” Anneannesi albümü açmadan yanına koydu.

Çıkmadan önce anneanneleri mutfaktan mavi bir kutu getirdi. “Teyzeniz için kurabiye yaptım. Bunu da götürür müsünüz?” diye sordu. Elif ayakkabılarını giymek için kutuyu kapının yanına bıraktı. Can kapıda bekliyordu. İkisi aceleyle çıktı. Elif kutuyu unuttu.

Otobüs durağına varmadan telefon çaldı. Anneannesi, “Kurabiyeler burada kaldı,” dedi. Kutuyu almak için geri döndüler. Elif içeri girince sehpanın üzerinde hâlâ kapalı duran albümü gördü. Bu kez montunu çıkardı. “Anneanne, annemin fotoğraflarını şimdi görebilir miyiz?” diye sordu. Can da içeri girdi. Teyzesini arayıp biraz geç geleceklerini söyledi.

Anneannesi albümü açtı. İlk fotoğrafta anneleri, başında kocaman bir şapkayla bahçede duruyordu. Şapkanın hikâyesini dinlerken üçü de güldü. Bu kez kimse saate bakmadı. Ayrılırken Elif mavi kutuyu aldı. Getirdiği lokum paketi ise hâlâ açılmamıştı. Anneannesi pakete bakmadı bile; albümdeki başka bir fotoğrafı gösterip “Bir dahaki gelişinizde bunu da anlatırım,” dedi. Elif artık bir sonraki ziyareti yarım saate sığdırmak istemiyordu.

Watch out

In Bir ara fotoğraflara bakarız, bir ara means “sometime”, with no fixed time. It does not mean “during a break” here and does not promise that they will look today. Notice how şimdi changes that vague plan into an immediate request on their return.

Try it yourself

  1. Who were the biscuits their grandmother had made for? Answer briefly in Turkish.

    Show answer or example answer

teyzeleri için / teyzesi için / teyzelerine / teyzeye / teyzesi / teyzeleri

Teyzeleri için: the grandmother asks the siblings to take the biscuits to their aunt. The unopened Turkish delight is a different gift, brought by Elif.

  2. Why did Elif and Can go back? Answer briefly in Turkish.

    Show answer or example answer

kutuyu almak için / kurabiye kutusunu almak için

Kutuyu almak için: the call says that the biscuits were left behind. Looking at the album becomes their new plan only after they return.

  3. Does “bir ara” in Elif’s words specify an exact time? Answer in Turkish.

    Show answer or example answer

hayır / hayır, bildirmiyor / bildirmiyor

Hayır: Elif gives no hour or day for looking at the photos. Her next sentence says that they need to leave, so the expression postpones the activity.

  4. Infer from the final paragraph: which mattered more to the grandmother, Turkish delight or conversation? Answer in Turkish.

    Show answer or example answer

    sohbet / sohbet etmek

Sohbet: the grandmother keeps sharing memories while the sweets remain unopened. Her invitation to tell another story next time supports the inference that she values their attention.
