Follow Elif through a birthday that seems forgotten. Her friends have a plan she does not know about. Read the first two paragraphs, predict the visit’s outcome, then check your prediction against the ending.

The idea

Keep track of who knows what. The words diye düşündü introduce a character’s thought: Herkes doğum günümü unuttu is what Elif believes, not a fact confirmed by the narrator. Compare her thought with the preparations and the objects she sees.

Cuma akşamı Ece ile Mert telefonda konuştu. Ertesi gün Elif'in doğum günüydü.

Kapının yanında Mert'in ayakkabıları vardı. Elif ayakkabılara baktı. “Mert de mi burada?” diye sordu. Ece gülümsedi. “Salona gel,” dedi.

Salonun kapısı kapalıydı. Elif kapıyı açtı. Balonları gördü. Mert mutfaktan pastayla çıktı. “İyi ki doğdun, Elif!” dediler. Elif güldü. “Demek çay için çağırmadınız!” dedi. Ece masayı gösterdi. “Çay da var!” dedi. Sonra hep birlikte pastayı yediler.

Watch out

Do not treat the missing messages as proof that the friends forgot. Also, the first kapıyı açtı describes Ece opening the entrance door; later Elif opens the living-room door. Check the named subject and the location each time.

Try it yourself

  1. Where did Ece hide the cake? Answer in Turkish.

    Show answer or example answer

    mutfakta

Mutfakta: the next sentence places the cake in the kitchen. The balloons are in the living room, so they do not identify the hiding place.

  2. At what time did Elif arrive at Ece’s home? Answer in Turkish.

    Show answer or example answer

    saat altıda / altıda

Saat altıda: the doorbell rings at six and Elif enters. Five is Mert’s arrival time, before the guest arrives.

  3. Whose shoes were beside the door? Answer in Turkish.

    Show answer or example answer

    Mert'in / Mert'in ayakkabıları

Mert'in: the shoes belong to Mert. They give Elif a clue that he is also in the house before she sees him.

  4. Did her friends really forget Elif’s birthday? Give a short answer in Turkish.

    Show answer or example answer

hayır / hayır, unutmadılar / unutmadılar / hayır, unutmadı / unutmadı

Hayır: the friends plan the surprise on Friday, prepare a cake and balloons, and celebrate together. Their silence keeps the plan secret; it does not mean they forgot.
