Elif cannot find her cat, Pamuk. Read the whole story once to follow her route, then read again to check which details identify the cat. The street conversations and ending are original.

The idea

Track each sighting separately: who saw a cat, where, and what did it look like? In this story, gri bir kedi is only a possible lead. Compare the collar with the description at the start before deciding whether Elif has found Pamuk.

Read the text

Elif sabah kedisini aradı. Kedisi Pamuk evde yoktu.

Elif, “Pamuk!” diye seslendi. Kedi başını kaldırdı ve miyavladı. Sonra kutudan çıktı ve Elif'in kucağına atladı. Biraz sonra Elif eve döndü. Kucağında Pamuk vardı.

Watch out

Do not turn gördüm (I saw) into “I found your cat”. The man reports a sighting, not a successful search. Likewise, aradı means “looked for” here; the missing cat and the search through different places make the meaning clear.

Try it yourself

  1. What kind of collar did Pamuk wear? Complete with one word: a ___ collar. ___ bir tasma.

    Show answer or example answer

    mavi

mavi: the opening describes a blue collar. Grey is the colour of the cat, so it does not complete the description of the collar.

  2. Why did Elif not take the first cat? Complete the Turkish sentence with one word to say it had no collar: Tasması ___.

    Show answer or example answer

    yoktu

yoktu: the cat by the bakery had no collar, whereas Pamuk wore a blue one. This contrast explains why Elif continued looking.

  3. Where did Elif find Pamuk? Complete with one word: in a ___ in front of the flower shop. Çiçekçinin önünde bir ___.

    Show answer or example answer

    kutuda

kutuda: the child points Elif towards a box in front of the flower shop, and she looks inside it. The bakery was only the first lead.

  4. At the end of the story, did Elif return home alone? Write yes or no in Turkish.

    Show answer or example answer

    hayır

hayır: the last sentence places Pamuk in Elif’s arms. She returned with her cat, so she was not alone.

Retell the search in four short Turkish sentences: the problem, the first lead, the box and the return home. Include the detail that rules out the first cat and one clue that identifies Pamuk.
