Follow Elif from home to her appointment and a meeting with Eda. First find her plan for the morning; then read again to see what actually happens. The dialogue and story are original.

The idea

Treat a character’s plan as a possibility until the narration confirms it. Here, gideceğim tells you where Elif intends to go. The later phone call changes the meeting place; use the final actions to establish the outcome.

Salı günü Elif’in saat onda doktor randevusu vardı. Bir akşam önce sorularını mavi bir kâğıda yazdı. Sabah çantasını hazırladı ve kâğıdı ön cebe koydu. Arkadaşı Eda’yı aradı. “Önce doktora, sonra kütüphaneye gideceğim. Saat on birde kütüphanenin önünde buluşalım mı?” diye sordu. Eda kabul etti.

Elif saat dokuz kırk beşte kliniğe geldi. Görevliye “Randevum saat onda,” dedi ve bekleme odasına geçti. Çantasını açtı ama kâğıdı bulamadı. “Sorularım evde mi kaldı?” diye düşündü. Ön cebe baktı. Mavi kâğıt oradaydı! Biraz sonra doktor Elif’i çağırdı. Elif odaya girdi, kâğıdını açtı ve sorularını sordu.

Klinikten çıktı. Saat on buçuktu ve yağmur başladı.

Read-aloud uses a synthetic Turkish voice available on your device. Voice quality and availability vary; it does not assess your pronunciation.

Watch out

Do not count the library visit as a completed event just because Elif mentions it. In the second call, orada points to the café she has just named, not to the library from the first call.

Try it yourself

  1. What time was Elif’s appointment: nine or ten? Answer in Turkish.

    Show answer or example answer

    onda / saat onda

Saat onda: she states the appointment time to the receptionist. The earlier time, 9:45, is when she arrives at the clinic.

  2. Which pocket of the bag held the blue paper: front or back? Answer in Turkish.

    Show answer or example answer

ön cebinde / ön cepte / çantanın ön cebinde

Ön cebinde: she first searches without finding the note, then looks in the front pocket. Her question about leaving it at home expresses a worry, not a fact.

  3. Why did Elif suggest the nearby café: rain or hunger? Answer in Turkish.

    Show answer or example answer

yağmur / yağmur yüzünden / yağmur nedeniyle

Yağmur yüzünden: rain starts as she leaves, and her umbrella is at home. The café is next to the clinic; the text gives no hunger as a reason.

  4. Did Elif and Eda go to the library that day? Answer briefly in Turkish.

    Show answer or example answer

hayır / hayır, gitmediler / gitmediler

Hayır: the friends meet at the café and discuss the book there. A book on the table does not mean they went to the library.

Use it today

Write two short Turkish sentences: one about the original plan and one about the actual meeting. Include the rain as the reason for the change.
