In Son Karar, Ceren and Mert recount the same difficult evening. Read each account separately, then use the final scene to explain what they decide and what they keep.
The idea
Track who owns each interpretation. Here, sandım reports what the current narrator believed; it does not prove the other person’s intention. When the voice changes, compare the reason for the silence with the earlier guess. The actions in the final section show which decision they put into practice.

Ceren — Cuma akşamı
Babamız emekli olduğunda ahşap atölyesini kardeşim Mert'le birlikte işletmeye başlamıştık. Aradan iki yıl geçmişti. Siparişler tamamen kesilmemişti ama giderleri karşılamak giderek zorlaşıyordu. Ben başka bir işte çalışıyor, akşamları hesaplarla ilgileniyordum. Mert ise bütün gün atölyede kalıyordu. O cuma, masadaki defteri kapatıp ona baktım. Bir karar vermemiz gerekiyordu.
“Biraz daha dayanabiliriz,” dedim. Mert cevap vermedi. Parmağını masanın üzerindeki eski bir çizikte gezdirdi. Bu sessizliği onay sandım. Babamızın yaptığı ilk masalardan birini nasıl atamamışsak atölyeden de vazgeçemediğimizi düşündüm. Oysa kendi adıma devam edecek gücüm kalmamıştı. Bunu söylersem kardeşimi yalnız bırakmış olacaktım. En azından ben öyle sanıyordum.
Mert — Aynı akşam
Ablam defteri kapatınca yine hesaplardan söz edeceğini sandım. Oysa ona anlatmak istediğim şey paradan ibaret değildi. Haftalardır eve döndüğümde kimseyle konuşmak istemiyordum. Sevdiğim işi yapmak bile ağır gelmeye başlamıştı. Atölyeyi kapatmak istiyordum; bunu söylemeye bir türlü cesaret edemiyordum.
Ablamın masaya baktığını görünce babamızı düşündüm. Geçen hafta uğramış, “Burası size yük oluyorsa benim için açık tutmayın,” demişti. Bu sözü ablama aktarmamıştım. Kararı babamızın ağzından söylemek, kendi sorumluluğumdan kaçmak gibi geliyordu. Masadaki çizikle uğraşırken nasıl başlayacağımı arıyordum. Ablamın sessizliğimi onay saydığını bilmiyordum.
Sonunda sessizliği bozdum. “Ben artık burada çalışmak istemiyorum,” dedim. Ablam hemen cevap vermedi.

Watch out
Do not carry the same speaker through every section: ablam in the second account refers to Ceren. Keeping the sign and the tools does not mean they are reopening. The ending separates their attachment to making things from running a business.
Try it yourself
How does Ceren initially interpret Mert’s silence? Choose: onay (agreement) / itiraz (objection).
Show answer or example answer
onay / kabul
onay (also kabul): the sister takes the silence as agreement because she assumes they both want to preserve the workshop. The brother’s account reveals that he was searching for words.
What does Mert really want? Choose: devam etmek (to carry on) / atölyeyi kapatmak (to close the workshop).
Show answer or example answer
atölyeyi kapatmak / kapatmak
atölyeyi kapatmak: the brother says this directly in his own account. His exhaustion goes beyond the financial problem, so simply finding more orders would not answer his concern.
Which words show that no new work will be accepted? Copy the notice on the door.
Show answer or example answer
Yeni sipariş alınmıyor.
Yeni sipariş alınmıyor.: the notice stops new orders after the last ones have been delivered. Together with the list of machines to sell, it shows that the decision is being carried out.
What does the tool bag at the end represent? Choose: yeni işletme (a new business) / kişisel uğraş (a personal pastime).
Show answer or example answer
kişisel uğraş / kişisel bir uğraş
kişisel uğraş: the tools are for a shelf on his own balcony, with his sister’s help. There is no customer setting a deadline, so the shared activity continues outside the business.
