This lesson builds “if someone is” from a noun, an adjective or a location. You will turn a statement of identity, quality or whereabouts into a condition, then add a consequence or request.

The idea

Separate ise keeps its vowels: hazır ise. When attached, use -sa after a ı o u and -se after e i ö ü; after a vowel add y: hasta → hastaysa, öğrenci → öğrenciyse. A final consonant stays: küçük → küçükse. Person follows the conditional: ben hazırsam, sen hazırsan, o hazırsa, biz hazırsak, siz hazırsanız; for “they”, onlar hazırsa, hazırlarsa or hazırsalar. Separate forms also take person endings: hazır isem. Negate with değilse: hazır değilsem. The condition describes a state; it does not assert that the state is true.

Examples

Read-aloud uses a synthetic Turkish voice available on your device. Voice quality and availability vary; it does not assess your pronunciation.

Watch out

Do not add the ordinary present person ending first: “if you are a student” is öğrenciysen, not öğrencisinse. Nor does every separate ise mean “if”: in Ben çiziyorum sen ise boyuyorsun, it contrasts two activities, “whereas”. Spacing alone cannot tell you the meaning.

Try it yourself

  1. Write one word: if you are a student (singular).

    Show answer or example answer

    öğrenciysen

öğrenciysen: the final i needs linking y, and -n identifies the one person addressed. The noun itself stays unchanged.

  2. Write one word: if we are ready.

    Show answer or example answer

    hazırsak

hazırsak: “we” is -k here, after -sa. The last vowel of hazır is dotless ı, so the form needs a, not e.

  3. Write one word: if you are at home (plural or polite).

    Show answer or example answer

    evdeyseniz

evdeyseniz: build on the whole location evde. Its final e requires y and front harmony; -niz addresses several people or one person politely.

  4. Write two words: if it is not correct. Attach the conditional to the negative word.

    Show answer or example answer

    doğru değilse

doğru değilse: the condition attaches to değil, so its i determines -se. Doğru remains a separate word; its final u does not control this suffix.

Use it today

Write three conditions for organising a workshop: one about a participant, one about the room and one negative condition. Give each a result, then rewrite one attached form with separate ise.
