You will put "your" onto a noun as a suffix and choose between -in, -ın, -un, -ün and plain -n.

The idea

Turkish says "your" (one person you call sen) with a suffix on the noun: evin, okulun, araban. After a consonant the ending has four shapes that copy the last vowel: -in after e i, -ın after a ı, -un after o u, -ün after ö ü. After a vowel it shrinks to -n: anne becomes annen.

Watch out

Do not stack a vowel onto a vowel: araba + -n is araban, never arabaın. A final p, ç, t or k in many nouns also softens before the vowel ending: kitap becomes kitabın and ağaç becomes ağacın, not kitapın.

Try it yourself

  1. Add “your” to ev (house): your house.

    Show answer or example answer

    evin

evin: ev ends in the consonant v, so the full ending is used, and the last vowel e is a front unrounded vowel, which gives -in.

  2. Add “your” to okul (school): your school.

    Show answer or example answer

    okulun

okulun: okul ends in a consonant, and its last vowel u is back and rounded, so the ending copies it as -un.

  3. Add “your” to araba (car): your car.

    Show answer or example answer

    araban

araban: araba already ends in the vowel a, so only the consonant -n is added and no vowel is needed.

  4. Add “your” to kitap (book): your book.

    Show answer or example answer

    kitabın

kitabın: the final p turns into b before a vowel ending, and the back unrounded a gives -ın.

Use it today

Write four short questions to a friend about their bag, phone, car and mother. Mark each ending and say whether the noun ended in a vowel or a consonant.
