Use boşaltmak when someone empties a container or clears a space. You will describe an action in progress, a finished job and a plan, then ask someone politely to clear a shelf.
The idea
Boşaltmak is transitive: in kutuyu boşaltmak, the box is what someone empties, so a specific box takes the accusative. The stem boşalt- keeps its t: boşaltıyorum, boşalttım, boşaltacağım. The last stem vowel is a, so the present form has dotless ı. The aorist is boşaltırım; the negatives include boşaltmıyorum and boşaltmadım. Boşaltabilir misiniz? can be a polite request.
| Person | Present continuous | Past | Future | Aorist |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ben | boşaltıyorum | boşalttım | boşaltacağım | boşaltırım |
| sen | boşaltıyorsun | boşalttın | boşaltacaksın | boşaltırsın |
| o | boşaltıyor | boşalttı | boşaltacak | boşaltır |
| biz | boşaltıyoruz | boşalttık | boşaltacağız | boşaltırız |
| siz | boşaltıyorsunuz | boşalttınız | boşaltacaksınız | boşaltırsınız |
| onlar | boşaltıyorlar | boşalttılar | boşaltacaklar | boşaltırlar |

Watch out
Do not drop the t when you mean that someone empties something. Kutuyu boşalttım means “I emptied the box”; Kutu boşaldı means “The box became empty”, without naming who emptied it. Clearing a shelf also does not necessarily mean cleaning it: rafı boşaltmak removes its contents.
Try it yourself
Complete with “I am emptying” in the present continuous.
