With dökmek, the same verb can describe a cooking step or a mishap. Learn its forms, name what you pour and say where it goes. Loose ingredients such as flour also fit this verb.

The idea

Dökmek takes the material as its object: sosu is the specific sauce. The destination takes the dative: makarnaya, onto the pasta. The context, or yanlışlıkla (by mistake), tells us whether this is pouring or spilling. The stem dök- keeps its k: döküyorum, dökeceğim. In the past, use döktüm; the aorist is dökerim.

Watch out

Do not assume dökmek always means an accident. Sosu makarnaya dök is an ordinary cooking instruction. Also distinguish the stem’s k from the future ending: in dökeceğim, only the k of -ecek becomes ğ. The negative present is dökmüyorum.

Try it yourself

  1. Complete with the first-person singular present continuous: I am pouring the sauce onto the pasta.

    Show answer or example answer

    döküyorum

döküyorum: şu anda locates the action now, and ben requires the first-person ending. The rounded vowel ö gives ü before -yor; the stem’s k stays.

  2. Use the definite past, first-person singular: yesterday I accidentally spilled the water on the floor.

    Show answer or example answer

    döktüm

döktüm: dün places the spill yesterday. The voiceless k calls for t in the past ending, and final m identifies the speaker. Yanlışlıkla makes the accident explicit.

  3. Use the future, first-person singular: I will pour the flour into the bowl shortly.

    Show answer or example answer

    dökeceğim

dökeceğim: birazdan and the requested future describe a plan. Start from dökecek; before the first-person vowel, the ending’s final k becomes ğ. The stem still begins dök-.

  4. Give a polite instruction with the plural or formal imperative: please pour the milk into this bowl.

    Show answer or example answer

    dökün / dökünüz

dökün / dökünüz: both address siz, either several people or one person politely. The longer form sounds more formal; dök alone would address a single familiar person.

Use it today

Write one cooking instruction and one accidental spill with yanlışlıkla. Name the material and destination in each. Then change a first-person past sentence to the future; continue with doldurmak to practise filling a container.
