With toplamak, you can gather loose objects, pick fruit or put a room in order. The object helps you choose the meaning. Start with the forms table, then use the examples to describe a small clean-up and a harvest.

The idea

The stem is topla-. Its final a becomes u before -yor: topluyorum. The negative is toplamıyorum, with a still in the stem. Compare the past topladım, the future toplayacağım and the habitual toplarım. The future adds y after the vowel, and its k becomes ğ in toplayacağım and toplayacağız. Use elma toplamak for picking apples and odayı toplamak for tidying the room.

Watch out

In odayı toplamak, the room is the object you put in order. Odada toplamak only places the gathering in the room; it does not itself mean tidying the room. Tidying also need not involve washing or scrubbing. Keep topluyorum distinct from the incorrect spelling toplıyorum.

Try it yourself

  1. Complete: I am gathering the leaves now.

    Show answer or example answer

    topluyorum

topluyorum: the action is happening now and the subject is “I”. The vowel before -yor is rounded u in this verb; toplarım would express a habit here.

  2. Complete in the past: we picked up the toys yesterday.

    Show answer or example answer

    topladık

topladık: yesterday places the action in the past. The ending -dık makes the subject “we”; topladım would describe only the speaker.

  3. Complete in the future: we will pick the apples tomorrow.

    Show answer or example answer

    toplayacağız

toplayacağız: tomorrow and “we” require the future plural form. The connecting y follows topla-, and -acak becomes -acağ- before the vowel of the person ending.

  4. Complete with “the room”: I tidy the room every evening.

    Show answer or example answer

    odayı

odayı: the sentence says what is being tidied, so the definite object needs the accusative. The y joins the two vowels; odada would only answer “where?”.

Use it today

Describe gathering leaves now, picking apples tomorrow and tidying your room every evening. Then make the first sentence negative and check the vowel before the present ending.
