With çizmek, you can describe a drawing, a plan or a mark left on a surface. Start with the forms table, then see how the object and the situation tell you which meaning is intended.

The idea

The stem is çiz- throughout: çiziyorum, çizdim. For a habit, use çizer, not çizir. In çizeceğim and çizeceğiz, the future ending changes its k to ğ; the stem stays intact. Compare bir daire çizmek (draw a circle) with daireyi çizmek (draw the particular circle). Altını çizmek means to underline; kelimenin altını çiz asks for a line under the word. The command is çiz, its negative çizme; “I am not drawing” is çizmiyorum.

Read-aloud uses a synthetic Turkish voice available on your device. Voice quality and availability vary; it does not assess your pronunciation.

Watch out

Do not translate every use as “draw”. In Anahtar masayı çizdi, the key scratched the table; nobody drew a picture of it. Drawing a shape is çizmek, while filling it with colour is boyamak. Keep the question separate in çiziyor musun?.

Try it yourself

  1. Complete with the aorist: my grandfather draws a bird every morning.

    Show answer or example answer

    çizer

çizer: her sabah sets up a repeated action, and the grandfather is a third-person singular subject. The needed aorist has e.

  2. Write only the verb: tomorrow we will draw the plan of the room.

    Show answer or example answer

    çizeceğiz

çizeceğiz: yarın places the action in the future and biz requires the “we” ending. Before that vowel, the future ending has ğ, not k.

  3. Tell one person not to scratch the table with a key. Write the negative command.

    Show answer or example answer

    çizme

çizme: this is a direct warning to one person. Adding -me to the command çiz stops the action; a statement such as çizmiyorsun would describe what the person is doing.

  4. Complete in the past: the student underlined the important word.

    Show answer or example answer

    çizdi

çizdi: the student completed the action, so use the third-person past. With kelimenin altını, the action is underlining, not scratching the word.

Use it today

Describe a shape you draw regularly and a plan you will draw tomorrow. Then write a warning about scratching a table. Next, use boyamak to say how you will colour your drawing.
