Use temizlemek to describe removing dirt from a surface or cleaning a room. The table lets you move from a job in progress to a finished task, a plan or a regular chore.

The idea

The stem is temizle-: its final e narrows in temizliyorum, but remains in temizledim and temizlerim. The future has a linking y: temizleyeceğim. The negative present is temizlemiyorum. A specific thing being cleaned takes the accusative: mutfak becomes mutfağı, with k changing to ğ. The table shows plural verb forms with onlar; singular verb forms are also possible with this plural subject.

Watch out

Putting scattered books away is odayı toplamak (tidying the room). Removing dirt is odayı temizlemek. These can be two stages of the same chore; simply putting things in order does not necessarily make a surface clean.

Try it yourself

  1. Complete with “I am cleaning”: the action is happening now.

    Show answer or example answer

    temizliyorum

temizliyorum: şu anda places the action in progress now, and the speaker is ben. The narrowed vowel is i; the ending -um identifies the speaker.

  2. Use the future form for “we”: we will clean the balcony tomorrow.

    Show answer or example answer

    temizleyeceğiz

temizleyeceğiz: tomorrow is a future plan for biz. A linking y separates the vowels, and the future ending’s k becomes ğ before the vowel of -iz.

  3. Use the aorist for “you” (one person): you clean the oven every week.

    Show answer or example answer

    temizlersin

temizlersin: the weekly routine calls for the aorist, and sen needs -sin. The stem already ends in a vowel, so the aorist adds just r.

  4. Choose the verb: we removed the dirt from the floor, and no stains remain.

    Show answer or example answer

    temizledik

temizledik: the absence of stains shows that dirt was removed. Topladık would describe gathering or tidying things, not this result; -dik places the action in the past with “we”.

Use it today

Describe one cleaning job you do regularly, one you are doing now and one planned for tomorrow. Then add a separate sentence about putting things away with toplamak.
