Use desteklemek for encouragement, practical help or support for an idea. At this level, you will also describe findings that support a claim without necessarily proving it.

The idea

Desteklemek takes a direct object: a specific person or thing has the accusative, as in seni desteklemek and bu öneriyi desteklemek. Support may be practical, emotional or intellectual; bulgular iddiayı destekliyor says the findings lend weight to the claim. Compare destekliyorum with destekledim and destekleyeceğim: the stem’s final e narrows in the present continuous, but stays in the other two forms. The negative is desteklemiyorum. The table gives explicit plural forms with onlar; a singular verb is also possible with a stated human plural subject.

Watch out

Keep the two constructions separate: seni destekliyorum but sana destek oluyorum. The latter uses the dative. Combining them as sana destekliyorum is wrong. Supporting someone does not mean endorsing every decision they make, and supporting a claim is not the same as proving it.

Try it yourself

  1. Complete with the correct form of öneri (proposal). Bu ___ destekliyorum.

    Show answer or example answer

    öneriyi

öneriyi: this particular proposal is the object of support. The final vowel of öneri requires a linking y before the accusative -i; öneriye would mark a dative instead.

  2. Use desteklemek in the affirmative present continuous, first person singular. Şu anda yerel tiyatroyu ___.

    Show answer or example answer

    destekliyorum

destekliyorum: the prompt asks what I am doing now. The final e of destekle- becomes i before -yor, while -um identifies the speaker; desteklerim would be the aorist.

  3. Use desteklemek in the future, first person plural. Gelecek yıl bu projeyi ___.

    Show answer or example answer

    destekleyeceğiz

destekleyeceğiz: the subject is “we” and the time is next year. A linking y follows destekle-, and the future ending’s k becomes ğ before the vowel of the person ending.

  4. Complete with the correct form of sen (you). ___ destek oluyorum.

    Show answer or example answer

    sana

sana: this sentence uses destek olmak, so the person receiving support takes the dative. Seni would fit a sentence with desteklemek, but not this one.

Use it today

Write three sentences: a project you support and how, a decision you do not support and why, and findings that partly support a claim. Then rewrite Seni destekliyorum using destek olmak.
