With kurmak, you can pitch a tent, found a company or establish contact. Learn these combinations as units: the noun tells you which meaning of the verb is intended.

The idea

Çadır kurmak means to pitch a tent, şirket kurmak to found a company, and iletişim kurmak to establish communication. In biriyle iletişim kurmak, the person takes -le/-la or separate ile. The stem stays kur- in kuruyorum and kurdum; the aorist is kurarım, and the future is kuracağım. Compare active Ekip sistemi kurdu with passive Sistem kuruldu: the system is what was installed.

Watch out

Do not put the person contacted in the dative: say danışmanla iletişim kurmak, not danışmana iletişim kurmak. Also keep kurar apart from kurulur: the first describes someone setting something up; the second says something is set up.

Try it yourself

  1. Complete with the habitual form of kurmak for “I”: I set the alarm for seven every evening.

    kurarım

kurarım: her akşam describes a routine, so use the aorist with the first-person ending. This verb has kurar, not kurur; kuruyorum would describe an ongoing action.

  2. Use the future of kurmak for “we”: we will contact the technical team tomorrow.

    Show answer or example answer

    kuracağız

kuracağız: the subject is “we” and the action is tomorrow. Add -acak to kur-; its final k becomes ğ before the vowel of -ız.

  3. Use the passive past: the new club was founded last month.

    Show answer or example answer

    kuruldu

kuruldu: the club did not found something; someone founded it. The passive stem kurul- takes past -du, and the sentence leaves the founders unnamed.

  4. Add the ending to danışman (consultant): we contacted the consultant about the project.

    Show answer or example answer

    danışmanla / danışman ile

danışmanla or danışman ile: the blank names the other participant in communication. Attached -la follows the last vowel a; separate ile expresses the same relation.

Use it today

Write a three-sentence plan: what your team will set up, whom you will contact, and when the system will be installed. Use an active future and a passive future.
