Holen means going to collect someone or something; bringen means moving them to a destination or recipient. One errand can involve both. English bring and take do not map neatly onto this pair: bringen can translate as either, depending on the destination.

The idea

Compare Ich hole die Jacke aus dem Auto with Ich bringe die Jacke ins Haus. Add a recipient in the dative: Ich bringe dir die Jacke. All these verbs form the Perfekt with haben: geholt, gebracht, abgeholt, mitgebracht.

One errand, two perspectives

Holen focuses on going to collect something: Ich hole die Jacke aus dem Auto. Bringen focuses on its delivery: Ich bringe die Jacke ins Haus. The same errand includes both. Bringen can also mean English take: Ich bringe das Kind zur Schule means I take the child to school, regardless of where the speaker is standing.

Abholen, mitbringen and the past tense

Abholen means picking up a person or collecting something ready for you: Ich hole dich am Bahnhof ab (I will pick you up at the station). Mitbringen means bringing something along: Bring bitte deinen Pass mit (please bring your passport). Both prefixes separate. All four verbs use haben: geholt, gebracht, abgeholt, mitgebracht.
