Notice, memorise, remember or remind: learn merken and erinnern with the pronouns and prepositions that change their meaning.

The idea
Merken can mean notice. Sich (dative) etwas merken means retain something in memory. Sich (accusative) an etwas erinnern means recall; jemanden an etwas erinnern means remind someone. An takes accusative here.
| Pattern / form | German example |
|---|---|
| merken: wahrnehmen | Ich merke, dass etwas fehlt. |
| sich (Dativ) etwas merken | Ich merke mir den Namen. |
| sich (Akkusativ) an + Akkusativ erinnern | Ich erinnere mich an den Namen. |
| jemanden an + Akkusativ erinnern | Du erinnerst mich an den Termin. |
Practise the supporting grammar before changing the people or tense in these examples: German reflexive pronouns: mich or mir?
Read the whole construction
