A noun phrase can compress a whole clause, especially in reports and formal writing. Converting it back into a clause can make the actor and timing clearer; neither form is always better.

The idea

Choose a preposition that keeps the relationship: weil → wegen, nachdem → nach, um ... zu → zu. Use its case and an established noun form; preserve the subject or object where needed with a possessive or genitive.

Patterns to compare
ConstructionGerman example
weil + Nebensatz → wegen + Genitivweil der Zug ausfällt → wegen des Zugausfalls
nachdem + Nebensatz → nach + Dativnachdem wir angekommen waren → nach unserer Ankunft
um ... zu → zu + Dativum die Kosten zu senken → zur Senkung der Kosten
Verb → Nomen: unterschiedliche Formenausfallen → der Ausfall; ankommen → die Ankunft; senken → die Senkung

Preserve the information when rewriting

Start with Nachdem wir angekommen waren, begann die Besprechung. Ankommen becomes Ankunft, wir becomes unserer, and nachdem becomes nach with the dative: Nach unserer Ankunft begann die Besprechung. The noun phrase preserves who arrived and the order of events, but the past perfect is no longer visible inside it. When converting back, use the past-tense context to restore nachdem wir angekommen waren; in an isolated phrase, ask for context instead of guessing the time.

Examples

  • Weil der Zug ausfällt, nehmen wir den Bus.Because the train is cancelled, we take the bus.
  • Wegen des Zugausfalls nehmen wir den Bus.Because of the train cancellation, we take the bus.
  • Nachdem wir angekommen waren, begann die Besprechung. After we had arrived, the meeting began.
  • Nach unserer Ankunft begann die Besprechung. After our arrival, the meeting began.
  • Um die Kosten zu senken, repariert die Firma alte Geräte.To reduce costs, the company repairs old equipment.
  • Zur Senkung der Kosten repariert die Firma alte Geräte.For the reduction of costs, the company repairs old equipment.

Watch out

Do not add -ung to every verb: ankommen becomes Ankunft and ausfallen becomes Ausfall. Nouns carry no tense, and a missing actor cannot safely be invented when you turn a phrase back into a sentence.

Try it yourself

  1. Formuliere mit wegen + Genitiv: Weil der Zug ausfällt, nehmen wir den Bus.

    Show answer or example answer

Wegen des Zugausfalls nehmen wir den Bus.

Wegen takes the genitive in this formal model: des Zugausfalls. The finite verb nehmen follows the entire opening phrase.

  2. Nach ___ Ankunft begann die Besprechung. (unser)

    Show answer or example answer

    unserer

Nach takes the dative. Ankunft is feminine, so unser becomes unserer; the possessive preserves the original subject wir.

  3. Formuliere mit um ... zu: Zur Senkung der Kosten repariert die Firma alte Geräte.

    Show answer or example answer

Um die Kosten zu senken, repariert die Firma alte Geräte.

Um ... zu states purpose. Die Firma is the understood actor of senken and the subject of repariert; Kosten returns to an accusative object.

  4. Wer ist angekommen? Nach unserer Ankunft begann die Besprechung. (wir / die Besprechung)

    Show answer or example answer

    wir

Unserer identifies the arriving people as wir. Die Besprechung is the subject of begann; it did not arrive.

Use it today

Rewrite one cause, one time relationship and one purpose from the examples in the other style. Underline the actor and circle the preposition or conjunction; explain any information the noun phrase leaves implicit.
