言う means “say”; おっしゃる honors the person who speaks.
The idea
Use 言う for your own speech or neutral reports. Use おっしゃる for someone you wish to honor, such as a teacher or customer: 先生がおっしゃいました. Both can introduce quoted words with と. The polite form is おっしゃいます, and the past is おっしゃいました.
| Form | Example |
|---|---|
Examples
I said “thank you”.
The teacher said, “It’s important.”
What did the customer say?
My friend says this book is interesting.
The professor often says that.
As the teacher said, let’s start.

Watch out
Do not use おっしゃる to elevate yourself. When speaking to an outsider about your own boss, normally use 言う or humble 申す instead; respect depends on the relationship and situation.
