探す focuses on the search; 見つける focuses on finding something.

The idea

Use 探す for looking for a person, object or opportunity, whether or not the search succeeds. Use 見つける when someone finds or discovers it. Both take the object with を: 鍵を探します, 鍵を見つけました.
