Explore the language of travel through institutions recorded in Edo-period sources.

The idea

関所 is a checkpoint and 通行手形 a travel permit; 役人 means an official, while 宿場 is a post town. The examples describe the past in modern polite Japanese, not quotations from historical documents.

Examples

The traveller showed a travel permit at the checkpoint.
An official inspected the traveller’s belongings.
During the journey, I stayed at a post town.
Before passing through the checkpoint, I prepared my permit.
There were places along the highway where travellers could rest.
Old records tell us what travel was like at the time.

Watch out

A 手形 is a document, not the checkpoint itself. Rules and inspections varied by place and time; do not assume every traveller had an identical experience.
