Listen for what the speaker finally wants to communicate or do. These original written examples can be read aloud for listening practice.
The idea
Identify the situation, then follow signals such as ですが (but), ではなく (not X but Y), and まず (first). Summarise the final decision or priority in a few words; background details explain it but are not always the point.
Examples
I planned to take the bus, but the rain stopped, so I’ll walk.
Today’s meeting will be held in the morning, not the afternoon.
The library will be closed all next week for construction.
Before printing the documents, please check the contents first.
The shop in front of the station is crowded, so let’s look for another one.
Tomorrow’s event will take place as planned even if it rains.

Watch out
Do not select the first familiar word: a bus or an afternoon may be mentioned only to be rejected. These are original practice items, not official JLPT questions.
