Plan independent Japanese listening practice

The idea

Choose an accessible recording with a transcript and set one goal, such as identifying the speaker’s conclusion. Listen once without text for the gist; listen again and note reasons and conclusion. Compare uncertain passages with the transcript, replay them, then record one difficulty and a date to revisit it. Try a different speaker or format later.

Examples

• 今週こんしゅうは、短みじかいニュースで要点ようてんを聞きき取とる練習れんしゅうをします。This week I will practise catching the main points in a short news report.
• 最初さいしょは字幕じまくを見みずに、話はなしの大おおまかな内容ないようをつかみます。First I grasp the general content without looking at subtitles.
• 二回目にかいめに、理由りゆうと結論けつろんをメモします。On the second listen, I note the reasons and conclusion.
• 聞きき取とれなかった部分ぶぶんを、書かき起おこしで確認かくにんします。I check the parts I could not catch against the transcript.
• 来週らいしゅうは別べつの話者わしゃの会話かいわを聞きいて、同おなじ方法ほうほうを試ためします。Next week I will listen to a conversation by different speakers and try the same method.
• 練習れんしゅうの後あとで、次つぎに直なおしたい点てんを一ひとつ決きめます。After practice, I choose one thing to improve next time.

Watch out

Reading along from the start can hide what you cannot hear. Do not measure success only by the number of replays: check what changed in your understanding.
