Use these examples to try the method, then adapt it to your own study.

The idea

Read the short dialogue below, or have your device voice read it if available. First listen without looking and note the day, time and place; then read the transcript, check what you heard, and repeat a short phrase aloud. Cover the text and listen again. Device voices vary and may mispronounce words or pitch, so check uncertain sounds against a reliable human recording. If a device voice is unavailable, read aloud yourself, cover the text and recall the details.

Read the text

ミカ:「土曜日どようび、何時なんじに会あいますか。」 ケン:「午後ごご二時にじに会あいましょう。」 ミカ:「どこで会あいますか。」

ケン:「駅えきの前まえはどうですか。」 ミカ:「はい、駅えきの前まえで会あいましょう。」 ケン:「では、赤あかいかばんを持もって行いきます。」

Examples

  • 土曜日どようび、何時なんじに会あいますか。What time shall we meet on Saturday?
  • 午後ごご二時にじに会あいましょう。Let’s meet at two in the afternoon.
  • どこで会あいますか。Where shall we meet?
  • 駅えきの前まえはどうですか。How about in front of the station?
  • はい、駅えきの前まえで会あいましょう。Yes, let’s meet in front of the station.
  • では、赤あかいかばんを持もって行いきます。Then I’ll bring a red bag.

Read-aloud uses a synthetic Japanese voice available on your device. Voice quality and availability vary; it does not assess your pronunciation.

Watch out

Listening while reading is useful, but it can hide gaps in what you actually hear. Test yourself once without text; a device voice is optional, not a pronunciation authority.
